Terms & Conditions



Burton Court is private property owned by the Royal Hospital Chelsea (RHC) and is designated for sporting activities.  A Burton Court membership allows access for walking and general exercise, dog walking, use of the tennis courts and use of the cricket nets (subject to availability).

-       The membership provides entry to Burton Court for one household, living at an individual address during the opening hours as advertised.

-       Access to Burton Court is via QR code only. Members without a QR code will not be granted access.

-       Members are always expected to behave responsibly and courteously towards other members and RHC staff.

-       Children under the age of 14 must be accompanied by an adult with a membership at all times whilst in Burton Court, except in the case of the child having a sports coaching session.

-       Members may bring in a guest, provided they remain with the guest at all times. The QR code may not be used by unaccompanied guests. Guest dogs are not permitted.

-       Members are permitted access to the Main Avenue, East Avenue, the paths parallel to Royal Hospital Road and the Football Pitch (when it is not being used for team games or Schools curricular sport).

-      The cricket ground, from gate to gate bounded by the hedges, is out of bounds at all times to others than match players, officials or grounds staff.

-       Last entry to Burton Court for members is 10 minutes before the published closing time. This is to ensure that the grounds are clear and may be locked by the published closing time.

-       The grounds are patrolled by the RHC uniformed security staff who may from time to time wish to verify access credentials, and who will direct usage of the grounds. Member’s compliance with the RHC security team’s instructions is required.

-       To further enhance the security of the RHC site, CCTV is in place at the St Leonards Gate entrance to Burton Court and Body Worn Cameras (BWC) are worn by the security staff, the Lawful Basis for having these systems in place is Legitimate Interest, which are listed below, the collection of data on this lawful basis does not require consent from data subjects.

·        Assist in providing a safe and secure environment. 

·        Reduce crime and the fear of crime by reassuring pensioners, staff, and visitors.

·        Deter criminal, abusive, threatening, and violent behaviour.

·        Identify, offenders in relation criminal, abusive, threatening, and violent behaviour.

·        Obtain and Provide the Police, RHC management with evidence upon which to take criminal, civil and disciplinary action, respectively.

·        Protect security staff from undue threats, abuse, and violence 

The data that will be collected will be images only by the CCTV and images and audio by the BWC, if required captured data will be used as evidence for Law Enforcement or Internal Investigation purposes. CCTV footage is stored on an internal server for 31 Days, BWC footage is stored for 6 days, once the threshold days have been reached the data anatomically deletes, if the footage is required for evidential purposes, it will be retained until such time that it is no longer required. Access to the data is restricted to the RHC Security Officer (CCTV & BWC), Site Security Manager (CCTV) and RHC Safety Security, Team Leader (CCTV).

-       For security purposes and to facilitate assistance within Burton Court, the names of members, their membership status and dog details (if applicable) will be shared with our security provider, who is a subcontractor employed by the RHC.

-       Members are required to show their access credentials to any member of RHC staff or nominated security staff upon request and must act in compliance with any reasonable instruction issued. All members, regardless of age, will be reprimanded if they are found to be in contravention of the Terms & Conditions of Membership, or of the rules within this Handbook.

-      Any issues regarding member’s behaviour or activities within Burton Court should, in the first instance be reported to Burton Court security, located in the security hut at the entrance or telephone 07759 526 237.

-       The lead member will be held responsible for any incident that takes place in Burton Court involving any members of their household.

-       Dogs must be kept under reasonable control by an adult at all times whilst in Burton Court premises. Behavioural issues arising between dogs should be reported to the Burton Court Manager; however, no liability is accepted by The RHC for any damage, nuisance or injury caused by or to any dog(s) while they are in Burton Court. Such matters must be dealt with between the members concerned. The RHC will not act as the mediator in such disputes; however, it will always act for the common good of its members. All reported incidents are kept on file and will be referenced if further incidents occur.

-       The RHC’s Commissioners reserve the right to close Burton Court at any time and to vary the times of opening, without notice if necessary, although advance notice will always be preferred. Several other uses are arranged in Burton Court each year that may require some limitations on access. The RHC will endeavour to advise members of these in advance.

-       Throughout late April and all of May annually the organisers of the Chelsea Flower Show use Burton Court for parking and service facilities, which means vehicles will be moving around the site.

-       Membership fees are set annually by the RHC and are subject to an annual increase in line with RPI.

-       If a membership is not renewed within 30 days of expiring, the members profile will be removed from the system.

-       If a member wishes to cancel their membership prior to the expiry date The RHC is not obligated to offer a refund. Refunds are solely at the discretion of the RHC.

-       Should members fail to follow Burton Court Rules and Policies or the instruction of RHC staff, the RHC reserves the right to withdraw all right of access to any member. This will occur electronically by cancelling the membership. No refund of fee will be made if the right of access is withdrawn permanently.

-       The tennis courts will be available throughout the year subject to weather conditions, except for any period of repair and maintenance for which members will be notified.

-       Any tennis court bookings must be made through the app and cancelled if members are unable to attend. Tennis Court bookings are monitored and failure to show up for a booking without cancelling will be noted by the Burton Court Manager. Repeated failure to show up for a booking without cancelling may result in suspension of tennis court booking privileges.

-       To prevent injury, members are advised to only use the courts in appropriate weather conditions. The RHC will close the grounds if weather conditions deteriorate and potentially represent a safety hazard.

-       Use of the Burton Court tennis coaches is only available to members. The service is not available to guests. Only Burton Court registered tennis coaches may coach tennis on the courts.

-       Members wishing to use a personal trainer or sports coach in Burton Court must register them with the Burton Court Manager. Trainers must provide public liability insurance certificate, risk assessment and up to date CRB check.

-       All the data provided upon commencing or renewal of membership is used solely to contact the member about matters pertaining to their Burton Court membership or for security purposes.

-       All personal data provided by new or existing members will be stored in a third-party CRM system (Clubright Ltd) for the purposes of managing the membership. This data is held in EU-based secure webservers.

-       To receive The RHC’s news, events, appeals, and fundraising opportunities, a member must tick the opt-in box on their membership profile, allowing for their data to be used by the RHC’s Department of Public Engagement.

-       Once a Burton Court Application/Renewal is completed the data provided will retained for 14 months, from the date that the membership is started or renewed, after which point the data will either be updated or, in the event of non-renewal, will be removed from the system.

-       All data must be kept up to date and any change of address etc must be reported to the Burton Court Manager.

-       By providing contact information such as a telephone number or email address the member gives permission to be contacted about membership by these means.

-       For security purposes and to facilitate assistance within Burton Court, the names of members, their membership status and dog details (if applicable) will be shared with our security provider, who is a subcontractor employed by the RHC.

-       Members and their guests use Burton Court at their own risk. The RHC will not accept any liability for loss, damage or injury caused to any member, guest or their dogs.

-       You will confirm your compliance with all statutory requirements regarding the use of the grounds for such purposes as your membership entitles you. Notwithstanding this you will indemnify and keep the RHC indemnified against any costs, claims or liabilities incurred by us and arising in connection with any matters relating to the provision of services provided under the terms of this agreement or arising out of any non-compliance and/or as a result of any breach of these Terms by you.
